Governor and Lieutenant Governor

What the office does

• The Governor holds "the supreme executive power" and is responsible for the faithful execution of the laws. Source: Illinois Constitution, Article V (The Executive).
• The Governor and Lieutenant Governor are elected together: one vote covers both, for the same party's pair. Source: Illinois Constitution, Article V (The Executive).
• Prepares and submits the state budget each year. Proposed spending may not exceed the funds estimated to be available. Source: Illinois Constitution, Article VIII (Finance).
• Can sign or veto bills. Illinois governors also have an item veto (striking or reducing spending lines) and an amendatory veto (sending a bill back with specific changes).
